What is LipiFlow®

Evaporative dry eye progresses slowly over a period of years. Most longtime sufferers of dry eye have to plan their daily activities around expensive medications and hot compresses, which takes time out of your day. Not only are these treatments inconvenient, but they’re often ineffective too. At Mississippi Vision, we have a solution that helps to treat dry eye at the source. LipiFlow is a treatment that helps fight evaporative dry eye symptoms by using heat to encourage the natural production of lipids for your tear film.

How does LipiFlow work?

LipiFlow uses a single-use eyepiece to relieve a blockage of the meibomian glands during treatment here at our office. The meibomian glands are responsible for creating the oil (lipid) layer in the tear film, which stops your tear film from evaporating too quickly. LipiFlow uses controlled warmth and gentle massage to open blocked meibomian glands, allowing your body to resume production of lipids. This procedure is not painful, patients tell us the treatment is like a “hot stone massage” for your eyes. The treatment takes very little time out of your day.

Is it effective?

Most patients who get the LipiFlow treatment experience relief in two weeks or even sooner. In a clinical study, 79% of patients reported improvement in their dry eye symptoms at 4 weeks. While there is no cure for dry eye, LipiFlow has been making a big difference in reducing dry eye symptoms such as burning, stinging, tearing, itching sensations and redness.

At Mississippi Vision, we understand that managing your dry eye symptoms can be tough. If you have been trying to improve your dry eye symptoms with eye drops and diet changes unsuccessfully, LipiFlow may be right for you! Call our office in Jackson, Mississippi today to schedule your appointment.
